Desdemona’s handkerchief
Synopsis
I am not what I am – or, in a matter of speaking, I am not the one that you think me to be.
Desdemona’s handkerchief play is not a play about Iago, the famous shakespearian character. Although it’s entirely a play that has it’s roots deeply buried in those famous lines.
Because nothing is what it seems to be.
Desdemona it’s not quite the innocent girl in love with the moor Othello, Emilia – Iago’s wife it’s more than a foot note and Bianca it’s not just a passing character with no importance in the global action of the play.
If you thought that you know the shakespearian play – think again! With Desdemona’s handkerchief we are retelling the story, in a funny, smart and provocative way, that surely will make you wonder – is this possible?
Cause in our story Desdemona has a questionable morality – once in a while she pays a visit to Bianca’s brothel, but not as a client as to offer her services. It’s her way of spicing up a dull life – a shattered dream, a dream of a life full of surprises and adventure, beside her famous moorish general, has become a suffocating environment, a golden cage, a conventional marriage beyond any expectation.
Bianca is the proud owner of a brothel – here, in Cyprus, where the action takes place, she made a good fortune selling and buying pleasure. But deep inside she longs for an honest life, for a loving husband, for a family.
Emilia is not only Desdemona’s servant, it’s a woman trapped in a deeply unhappy marriage, with a devil of a husband, Iago, and still with hope for a better life.
All three are dreaming of a new future, all three are nothing but pawns in their’s lovers’s hands.
Desdemona’s handkerchief is a story about broken dreams, about unhappiness, about the inability to see the other’s misfortune. It’s a story about 3 woman crushed under the pressure of their husbands and lovers vanity and lust for power, it’s a story about a society in which woman are no more than trophies or tools for their man, it’s a story about wrong choices, redemption and hope.
3 great actress – Anca Sigartau as Emilia, Arabela Neazi as Bianca and Elena Mogildea Cernea as Desdemona, work together for a reimagined untold story about Othello, and Iago and Casio and all the mischievous man that are willing to sacrifice their loved ones to gain power above all.
