PRIDE IN THE FIRST-PLACE INTERNATIONAL FINISH AT OMÜ

Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMÜ) Visual Communication Design Department lecturer Abdulkerim Turkaya won first prize in the Environmental Poster category at the International Poster Competition held in Peru.

As part of the Peru Design Biennial 2019, Abdulkerim Turkaya, a lecturer in the Department of Visual Communication Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Ondokuz Mayıs University, participated in the second call of the International Poster Competition with his work “Protect the Nature.” His poster was awarded first place in the Environmental Poster category.

“Cutting Down Green Means Cutting Down Life”

Speaking about the poster design that earned him the first prize, Turkaya explained that poster design is a field that contributes to social communication among people living in different parts of the world. It seeks to create public awareness around social issues by making information easy to understand, communicate, and use effectively, while fostering a shared sense of awareness, sensitivity, and responsibility.

In this context, Turkaya explained that his poster seeks to raise international awareness about the destruction of forests, which are a common living environment for humanity, due to various causes such as commercial exploitation, the creation of agricultural land, and wildfires.

He emphasized that, in today’s world, it is almost impossible to find a forest that has not been ecologically affected by human activity, and that the destruction of forests will inevitably have serious consequences for human life in the future.

Using a minimalist visual style and a humorous approach, the design was inspired by the Turkish proverb “Yeşil kesen, baş keser,” conveying the idea that every tree forming a forest should be understood as a living organism capable of breathing, and that destroying it is, in a sense, like destroying human life.

Award Ceremony and Exhibition

The designers whose works received awards or were selected for recognition were invited to the award ceremony and exhibition opening, scheduled to take place on June 28, 2019, in Callao, Peru.

Additional International Recognition

The university also notes that Abdulkerim Turkaya had received recognition in two other international poster competitions in 2019.

He was a finalist in the 3rd International Poster Contest by Graphic Stories Cyprus, held in Cyprus, with the theme “Graphic Design, Challenging the Perception,” and in Uruguay Cartel 2019, organized in Uruguay under the theme “Politicamente Incorrecto
