The Suppliant Women

Synopsis
Synopsis

The Suppliant Women is a tragic narrative inspired by Euripides. It tells the story of grieving mothers who feel a profound sorrow for their lost children. Mothers who cry out in the court of King Creon, pleading for the bodies of their sons, slain in battle. All they seek are the lifeless forms of their boys, left upon the ground, to perform the sacred rites that will lay them to rest.

In this scene, we follow the intertwined essence of nature and humanity, tracing the destinies of these mothers from pre-creation to post-creation. We give them birth, nurture their evolution, and in confronting society, we gender them—an identity shaped by the world, molded by societal norms, in harmony with their physical selves. Then, we watch as they perish. They become women, transformed into mothers who will forever mourn, seek justice, and carry the weight of their sorrow. These mothers, in their anguish, will stop at nothing and reach out to anyone for solace. Yet, what remedy is there? Their fate is preordained, and they are but puppets, strings held firmly in the hands of destiny. History is busy scripting their tales.

The mother resides within the child, and the child resides within the mother. They are one, yet also separate.
